On the issue of climate protection, the German states of Northrhine-Westphalia (NRW) has been actively supporting its local authorities for years in the implementation of the quality management system European Energy Award and gives awards every year to local authorities for the progress they have achieved.
On November 13, 2012, in Oberhausen, Climate Protection Minister Johannes Remmel presented the European Energy Award to 20 local authorities and four administrative districts from NRW.

Within the framework of the German Sustainability Award, towns and local authorities also received awards this year for the first time. Honored here were local authorities that operate sustained town development or have implemented successful sustainability projects within the framework of their economic possibilities.
The ceremonial event in front of 800 invited guests from local authorities, business, politics, the media, NGOs, and company, the awards were presented to representatives of "Germany's most sustainable towns and municipalities" by, among others, Dr. Wolfgang Schäuble, Prof. Klaus Töpfer, and Petra Roth.

Following the national ceremony for the European Energy Awards in mid-November in Oberhausen, 25 European local authorities received the European Energy Award Gold in Brussels on November 26, 2012.
The Swiss Federal Councillor Doris Leuthard together with EU Commissioner Günther Oettinger and NRW Climate Protection Minister Johannes Remmel handed over this sought-after award to 25 European local authorities.

Many insiders in German local authorities are well aware of the master plan 100% climate protection". Local authorities that are pursuing the "master plan 100% climate protection" have undertaken to achieve the target of a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of 95% compared to 1990 by 2050. Within the framework of a competitive application process, local authorities were able to obtain a subsidy from the Federal Ministry for the Environment.
On June 7, 2012, the final 19 towns, municipalities, and administrative districts received awards from the Minister for the Environment.
